Fashion Challenge: Style a Parka

As we get into December,  I can finally say with confidence that cold weather has set in across the United States. And with cold weather comes precipitation , and there is NOTHING more miserable than being wet AND cold.

A parka is a great way to fight the winter elements. Waterproof,  comfortable, and durable, these coats are more practical than some trendier ones you might find. And a sturdy parka is a great investment . It will keep you looking and feeling great, even on the coldest days.

This week's challenge is to take your parka and turn it into a work of fashion! Interested, but unsure how?Read on for tips on how to style a parka!

Tips and Tricks for Looking Fashionable in a Parka
If you're shopping for a new parka, look for a version that's more on the dressy side. Since it's a parka, you won't have to worry about it ever looking too dressy. A more tailored version will up the style of a usually casual piece, and will make you feel like a million bucks even in the harshest weather.
Avoid the overly shiny variety if you can C as you can see in the photos above, parkas with a more matte finish generally look more stylish and are easier to wear than the shiny, puffy, quilted kind.
Find a version that is loose enough to layer underneath. This way, you can pile on shirts and sweaters and still have enough room for movement.
Belted versions are great as well . they'll give even puffy down parkas a bit of shape!

Use accessories to make your outfit cute. Beanies and trapper hats look adorable on cold winter days.
I love the military-style parkas with fur lining that have been popping up everywhere, from runways to Target. They're both practical and chic.
Don't be afraid to try wearing your parka with a dress or a skirt. It'll look fine as long as you add a pair of tights or leggings and boots.

Top 4 Methods to Clean down Jackets

How to clean down jacket

Hand Wash (For normal and super light-weight down jackets)
Soak the jacket in water and add in diluted down cleaner. Continue to let it soak for 5 minutes; clean the dirty part with a soft brush. Squeeze out the water, then rinse and soak the garment in clean water. Repeat this cycle 3 to 4 times until the garment is thoroughly clean.
Machine Wash (For long and more heavy down jackets)
Remove fur collar and accessories from the jacket; zip up and snap all velcros before putting it in a laundry bag. Launder with two bottles of down cleaner (for washing two garments) on gentle cycle. Do not use any detergent with bleach or softener as the chemicals will damage the down clusters.

Drying
Spin dry on high speed in the washer for 3 to 5 times, then dry the garment in an automatic dryer (in accordance with the instructions on the washing label). Toss a tennis ball in before the drying cycle begins as it is ideal for fluffing up the down clusters. This method might not be suitable for down jackets with light-color or very thin outer shell. After drying for 5 to 10 minutes, fluff and pat the down inside by hand and then put it back in the dryer. It takes a long time to have the down jacket dried completely, but repeating this process is the best way to retain the fluffiness of the jacket.
Professional Cleaning (The best method)
The best way to clean a down jacket is by a professional cleaner as they have the experience and expertise in cleaning down items.

Down Jacket Buying Advice

There are a lot of variables to consider when choosing a down jacket. In our

detailed review of 10 top men's down jackets, we learned a lot about what

features really matter. In this article we have compiled into one place our

overall down jacket buying advice, detailing all the things you should

consider before choosing a jacket.

Synthetic Vs. Down Insulation
The first decision when buying an insulation layer is to decide if you need a

down or synthetic jacket. Down is much warmer for its weight and compresses

better, but when it gets wet, it will lose its loft, meaning it will also lose

its ability to keep you warm. Synthetic insulated jackets are quite a bit

heaver at the same thickness and warmth, and they don't compress and pack down

as well, but they keep much of their loft when wet. This means that even when

wet a syntactic jacket can still retain some of its insulating capability and

thus its warmth.

Down tends to last longer, and the feathers themselves allow for more

breathability than synthetic insulations. Your average synthetic jacket will

lose much of its warmth over 5-7 years, depending on wear, compared with your

average down jacket that with equal care can retain its warmth for10-20 years.

Down also has a higher resiliency after being compressed than synthetic

insulations, so after being unpacked a down jacket will regain its shape more

quickly.

Synthetic jackets are more durable when it comes to abrasion. If you climb

that last chimney pitch in the dark wearing your synthetic puffy coat and put

some holes in it, no big deal. If you put holes in your down jacket, the down

will leak out. Down also tends to be more expensive.
